Optimist International Oratorical Contest

Beginning in 1928, the Oratorical Contest is the longest-running program of Optimist International. The Optimist Club of Milwaukee invites local students to gain valuable public speaking experience, share their perspectives, and compete for life-changing college scholarships.

Official 2026–2027 Topic

“How My Actions Strengthen Those Around Me”

Participants prepare and present a 4-to-5-minute speech addressing this year’s theme, exploring how personal choices, leadership, and everyday actions uplift peers, families, and communities.

Scholarship Opportunities

Students begin by competing at the local club level, with winners advancing through Zone and District rounds:

• District Scholarships:

  • First Place: $2,500
    
  • Second Place: $1,500
    
  • Third Place: $1,000
    
• World Championships Level: Top district winners earn the opportunity to compete globally for up to $22,500 in total scholarship awards.
  

Key Contest Details

• Eligibility: Open to all youth under the age of 19 (as of October 1st of the current contest year) who have not yet graduated from high school or the equivalent.
  
• Speech Format: 4 to 5 minutes in length, delivered on the official topic.
  
• Contest Dates: Local club contest dates, location details, and entry deadlines will be announced shortly.
